Segregation is the action or state of setting someone or something apart from others. The most well known form of segregation is racial segregation against African-Americains

In the U.S, segregation was mostly in the northern states from the late 19th century to mid-20th.

After slavery was abolished, northern states created the segregation laws.

The idea was that white people and black people were separated but equal.

This was not true. In fact, there was a lot of discrimination against black people. They didn't have the same opportunities and rights as white people. Segregation ended in 1968 with the Civil War, thanks to the fight of activists like Martin Luther King Jr.

In this picture we can see 4 young women. The women on the right are white while the ones on the left are black. We can see the white women sitting on a bench wearing pretty dresses while the black women are wearing a maid's uniform. We can notice that the white women are privileged while the others are not. This is a representation of racial segregation in the U.S where white people are considered the superior race.
