    Women were not protected at that time in Gilead. So they were not free to walk in streets, they were not free to go to laundromat by themselves at night, they were not free to work and own their money. So as per aunt Lydia over the time women had two kinds of freedom that was not available at that time and women today should appreciate and be glad that they got it.
